Account safety tips

HellOw,

We want to share some information about account safety.

Here are some account safety tips:
↪ Don't click on links sent by other players.
↪ Don't share your password with anyone.
↪ Do not change your password or email address if others ask you to. ↪ Do not register on websites that claim to offer you free Passes or other game advantages.
↪ Choose a password that is difficult to guess.
↪ Use a password that is unique to Howrse; don't use it for other websites.
↪ Never share account information, even if the player says that they are part of the Howrse team.

If someone claims to be part of the Howrse team, remember that you can find the list of the game's team in the Game Help.

You should be the only one accessing your account with your credentials (username + password). Sharing your password with others is against the rules and can also allow them to steal your account.

If you receive a PM from another player, please be on your guard, especially if they want to offer you some horses/items, or start asking for your personal information!
We strongly advise you not to share your personal information with anyone, link your name, age, school, or your home location, for example.

Be very wary if someone asks you to talk outside of Howrse. We strongly advise you to use only the Private Messages on Howrse. If anything happens, and you report them, we will be able to moderate them.

Before trying to steal your account, some account thieves may reach out to you with overly friendly messages to try to win your trust. So please be also wary when players try to befriend you and, after some time of talking to you, they ask for your password or private information. You should never share it, even if you believe that you can trust that person!

If you have doubts or if you need advice regarding your account safety, please remember that you can contact the moderation team or Support.

    If someone else gains access to your account, you can lose horses, items, resources, or even your whole account… These can be the terrible consequences of phishing.


    What is phishing?

    It is a fraudulent practice of sending messages intended to deceive an Internet user. The perpetrators send messages with tempting offers to encourage Internet users to share their credentials (login, password) and personal and/or banking information by posing as a trusted person to steal their accounts. They can invite you through a form, a Flashcode, or even a link to a site similar to Howrse.


    How do they operate?

    The thief may contact you in-game by a private message, post a message on the forums, or use their profile presentation.
    They can pose as part of the support team, as an Owlient employee, or even use the account of one of your friends that they have previously stolen.

    They may try to lure you into their nets with particularly tempting offers, a threat of account closure, or any other technique that could deceive your vigilance or scare you.

    They may send you a link by PM, a QR Code, or ask you to search for information on a search engine as "good faith" (for example: "if you don't believe me, look at xxxx on Google, you will see").
    The site or the form on which you will arrive will ask for your identifiers (username and password). Once the information is submitted on the site, the thief recovers it and will be able to connect with your identifiers and steal your horses, Divines, Passes, Items, and Equus.

    They can also use your account to attract other players, including your friends. You risk a double penalty by seeing your account sanctioned for phishing as well.

    Phishing PM example:
    "Hello! You have been selected by the Howrse raffle. This raffle is organized by Owlient and rewards random players every month. Just scan the QR code that will be sent to you, or click on the link to our form. You can fill out this form and access your winnings from a list of several rewards! Please do not hesitate to contact Owlient support or the account delivering this message to ask any questions. Goodbye."


    How to protect yourself?

    ↪ First and foremost, NEVER share your password with anyone. The Howrse team (administrators and moderators) will NEVER request your password.

    ↪ Use a unique password for your Howrse account!
    Avoid using a password that you already use elsewhere, such as for connecting to your e-mail.
    The password should include random letters, numbers, and symbols. It should not include your player name, the name of your pet, or any other easily identifiable element.

    ↪ When in doubt, do not click on the link and report the message through the related reporting tool or contact our Customer support team.

    ↪ When you receive a private message, check who the sender is and if there is a link in the message. Private messages from the Howrse team appear in the "Official" tab.

    ↪ Do not share your personal information!
    Make sure you don't share personal details on the forums, private messages, your profile page, or anywhere on the game (name, first name, e-mail address, where you live, etc).

    ↪ Be on your guard if you are offered attractive but suspicious offers or if someone threatens you.

    ↪ Account thieves can hook their victims with:
    ➞ A external page with a copy of an event organized by Owlient (Tombola, Lottery, etc);
    ➞ Free Passes, Equus, items, or Divine horses (if it’s free, it’s probably too good to be true);
    ➞ A made up a problem with your account.
    ➞ Threats! They can try to threaten you with a ban, or Karma loss, for example, to scare you.

    This list is not exhaustive, account thieves can be very creative!

    ↪ Pay attention to external links and always check our forum communications and in-game offer inserts to be sure they are Howrse official promotions.

    ↪ When you click on a link, if a warning message appears, please take a few minutes to check if it is a secure link.

    ↪ Official communications appear in your private messaging via the "Official" tab.

    ↪ When in doubt about a link, do not click on it.

    ↪ Report suspicious private messages using the tool available in the game.

    Do you think you've been a victim of phishing?

    If it has just happened, log into your account without delay and change your password. If you are successful in doing so, the security of your account is no longer compromised.
    However, please contact the customer support to advise of the situation and to make sure your account is really secure.

    These tips apply to Howrse, but not only! The risk of phishing is everywhere: Phone, Email, and Social Networks, for example.

    Account safety tips

    Here, we are sharing several possible scenarios and steps you can take to keep your account secure.


    Scenario 1
    You receive a Private Message from someone claiming to be an official staff member asking for your password.

    An official staff member will NEVER ask for your password because we don’t need it.

    You can find the list of the game's team in the Game Help.

    If, for any reason, we need to contact you, it will be from one of these accounts. However, this is unlikely to happen.

    Moreover, all private messages from the Howrse team will arrive in your mailbox under the “Official” tab.

    If someone asks for your password:
    Click on the “Report abuse” located near that message so that our team is alerted. We will act as soon as we are available.

    Blacklist the player who contacted you so you don’t receive any further messages from them. You will find the "Add to black list" button at the bottom of the message.

    NEVER share your password with anyone.



    Scenario 2
    A player offers you free Passes but requests that you fill out a “survey form".

    There is no way for others to give you free Passes. These surveys only do one thing: allow another person to access your account as they ask for all your login information. Sharing your login information is unsafe and against the rules.

    What can you do in such a case?
    Click on the “Report abuse” located near that message so that our team is alerted. We will act as soon as we are available.

    Blacklist the player who contacted you so you don’t receive any further messages from them. You will find the "Add to black list" button at the bottom of the message.

    DON'T fill out the survey!



    Scenario 3
    A player contacts you, saying they want to help others due to the economy, or asks if you want free Passes. All you need to do is change the email address of your account to the one they provide.

    If you change the email address linked to your account, it will allow them to use the “Forgotten password” feature to reset the password and potentially gain access to your account.

    What can you do in such a case?
    Click on the “Report abuse” located near that message so that our team is alerted. We will act as soon as we are available.

    Blacklist the player who contacted you so you don’t receive any further messages from them. You will find the "Add to black list" button at the bottom of the message.

    Do not change your email address when others ask you to.



    Scenario 4
    A Player contacts you offering to help farm Aging Points and says they can get you Passes and Equus. They may claim that they usually use the account sharing (co-management) feature, but at this time, it’s glitched, and they will need your login information to do so.

    Sharing your login information is unsafe and against the rules.

    What can you do in such a case?
    Click on the “Report abuse” located near that message so that our team is alerted. We will act as soon as we are available.

    Blacklist the player who contacted you so you don’t receive any further messages from them. You will find the "Add to black list" button at the bottom of the message.

    You can also contact one of our in-game team members to see if they know about any issues with that feature.

    Don't send them your password!


    In any of these cases, you shouldn't name and shame them publicly in the game.
