I thought I was doing ok with a 35k skill horse until I kept placing fifth and realising people had 40k skill horses...
How do I get there? I've got as many items as possible for bonuses. I've maxed training. Can I breed in a particular way to get a foal that can have higher skill points? Is that based on excellence stars?
I've bred my 30k GP horses together but the average skill points as an adult at 100 blup is still only 30-35k

I feel like I'm missing something.
Are there indicators for me to know if a horse is a high skilled and worth putting time into? E.g. X skill points by x age for x breed?

You will have to breed higher GP horses with 100 BLUP and Aphrodite's Tears to get higher skills.
There is a random factor to skills, so a good method to calculate whether you are close to the highest is multiple the GP by .312.

Right now the highest GP in the game is 31,190.78 - which would mean the highest the IBS would be 9731.52. Without lessons already puts the horse over 40,000 skills

From what I can see in your breeder's production and Thoroughbred farm, you tend to cover your 30k+ GP mares when they're way below 100 BLUP. Covering mares as low as 20 BLUP will cause the IBS of the foal to really take a nosedive. Unless you're breeding AP foals, waiting until age 10 (after also bolding the top 3 skills and gaining 20 wins) as well as using Tears like CrazyAndFresh said will yield good IBS that should put you above or at least very close to 40k skills.

However, Thoroughbreds are also a very busy breed so winning competitions and rosettes is a challenge default smiley (lol). Especially at low seniority.

    Best of luck!
